Mgr. Nikola Novotná

Nikola Novotná has focused her research on the environment and the Šumava region since her bachelor’s studies, when she studied the destruction of villages as a result of the construction of the border zone in the 1950s. In her master’s studies, she based her work on the concept of environmental history and focused on air pollution in northern Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. She combines her interest in the Šumava region and environmental issues in her dissertation research, which focuses on the impact of the construction of the Iron Curtain and its infrastructure on the landscape. She is interested in the memory of the landscape, e.g., how it changed near the state border, how the landscape was affected by the inaccessibility of the area, post-humanist approaches to environmental history, and cultural constructs of the landscape, e.g., what ideas we associate with wilderness and the usable part of nature.
