As a historian, Jan Mareš devoted himself to the modern social and cultural history of the Czech lands, especially to the history of Czechoslovak tramping and intersectionality within the German-speaking worker socialist movement in North Bohemia before the First World War.
His work experience led him to become interested in environmental humanities. In the years 2014–2023, he worked at the Office of the Government and then at the Ministry of the Environment to develop the sustainable development agenda with an emphasis on strategic planning. Since October 2023, as a member of the Centre of Technology Transfer of the Czech Academy of Sciences, he has been looking for ways to improve the transfer of scientific knowledge and its practical use across social sciences and humanities.
