Lucie Česálková is a film historian. She works at the Department of Film Studies at Faculty of Arts, Charles University and is the editor-in-chief of the academic journal Iluminace, published by the National Film Archive of the Czech Republic.
She has worked as an editor for Literární noviny and Cinepur. She focuses on the history of Czech non-fiction film, particularly its role in the dissemination of knowledge, education, and promotion, but she also studies the history of non-commercial film distribution and its audience.
Currently, from an environmental perspective and the perspective of energy humanities, she is interested in the framing of nature as a resource in Czech culture, especially film—she studies the visual regimes of coal, water, oil, natural gas, and nuclear power, as well as the surrounding narratives and tropes. Together with Christian Ferenz-Flatz, she leads the informal international research group Socialist and Post-Socialist Useful Film at NECS (European Network for Cinema and Media Studies), where she is also a member of the Steering Committee.
